Description
This is a panel from Louis Renard's surreal illustrations of the marine life of the East Indies, from his 1754 book, "Histoire Naturelle des plus rares curiositez de la mer des Indes". Birthing from his extravagantly wild imagination, these hand colored copper engravings are a treat to the eye. Although the diagrams themselves are far from accurate, they inspired artists and the scientific world to explore the marine life in all its fine details. Renard never traveled outside the Netherlands, so he based these fish illustrations on the books and references of explorers and scientists of the time. Vividly colorful and whimsical, this beautiful vintage collection includes fantastic illustrations of fish, crabs, oysters, lobsters and even mermaids and sirens. Renard has also skilfully hidden secret magical symbols and patterns within the details of some of these bizarre sea creatures. A great conversation starter, these artworks can be unique wall art pieces for all kinds of interior styles. The prints from this series would be of great interest for collectors of aquatic, nautical, marine, zoological art and lovers of nature. Combine that with a pinch of imagination and Renard's dreamlike sea creatures are a rare assortment that must not be missed.
